Cheng Taining, male, architectural expert, Chinese engineering design master, born on December 9, 1935 in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, graduated from Nanjing Institute of Technology (currently Southeast University) in 1956, is now serving as chief architect of China United Engineering Corporation Limited and Chief Director of China United Engineering • Cheng Taining Architectural Design Research Institute while acting concurrently as a member of the Academic Committee of the Architectural Society of China and a member of the Expert Commission of China International Engineering Consulting Corporation. In 2005, he was elected as academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Academician Cheng Taining has been long working in the forefront and unswervingly dedicated himself to exploring the development of modern architecture in China. In the course of design, he strived to combine the modern architectural concepts and the oriental culture. He once participated in the conceptual design of such major projects of Great Hall of the People in Beijing and Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge Head Building, etc.. He once took charge of over 40 domestic and overseas major projects including the New Hangzhou Railway Station, Ghana National Theatre, Mali Conference Building, Huanglong Hotel, Mali Convention Building, Shaoxing Civil Square, United Nations Small Hydropower Center, Hangzhou Holiday Inn, Master Hongyi Memorial Hall, Shaoxing Lu Xun Memorial Hall and Haining Museum, etc.. Academician Cheng Taining created a batch of distinctive architectural works, three of which won the national excellent design award, special, first and second prize at provincial and ministerial level. In the “Chinese Architectural Art Exhibition” convened at the 20th World Architects Congress, in which 54 Chinese works in the past 50 years would be selected for exhibition, three works accomplished by Academician Cheng Taining individually were selected. Relevant comments believed that Academician Chen Taining, as one of the typical representatives of China's third-generation architects, has made positive contributions to the development of Chinese architecture. He once published such papers as Analysis and Prospect of Chinese Architecture, etc.
The practice of Academician Cheng Taining has also attracted attentions of foreign peers. Among the “World Architecture Collection in the 20thCentury” edited by the International Union of Architects, which would select outstanding 1000 works available in the past century of the world, two works accomplished by Academician Cheng Taining overseas have been selected. Books and exhibitions in Yugoslavia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong have introduced his works on special column. In 1990, Academician Cheng Taining was titled as “National Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions”; in 2000, he was appraised as Chinese Engineering Design Master; in 2002, he won the “Nomination Award for Liang Sicheng Architecture” and in 2004, he won “Liang Sicheng Awards for Architecture”.
