Studying at SEU
-A Crucial Decision for My Life-
Editor's Note
Anupam Sarker, an international student from Bangladesh, is currently a Ph.D. student from School of Information Science and Engineering at SEU. Amazed by China's rapid development in recent years, he became more interested in this country. Finally, the time-honored history of Nanjing and the top-notch education of SEU motivated him to pursue his Ph.D. Degree here. When studying at SEU, he utilized every opportunity to explore his life, during which a variety of wonderful stories happened.
01
Yearning for the Outside World
My name is Anupam Sarker. I was born in the suburb of Bangladesh, where I spent my childhood. At the primary school, I was very fortunate that my uncle and aunt, my most significant family members, offered me the opportunity to live with them in the city where I continued my elementary studies. I am always grateful to them for laying a solid foundation for my life and morality.
My time in the city greatly broadened my field of vision. Thus I fostered the idea at that time, of studying abroad to be exposed to sophisticated technologies and innovative thoughts of the outside world in the future. Interestingly, I often chased the planes in the sky when I was a little boy, and I was yearning to be one of the passengers on a plane and flew to the outer world to explore my life. I couldn’t believe that my dream came true after I graduated from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University, a renowned university named after the father of Bangladesh.

First Meeting with China
In 2008, Beijing successfully held the Olympic Games, which amazed the whole world and captured my interest. As exchanges between different countries have become more frequently, my understanding of China has deepened as well. I was amazed by the fact that China had become a global leader in almost every aspect, from the economy to technological development, which extremely motivated me to study in China, because I was desirous to see why this mysterious ancient country in the East had so much power to develop so rapidly. Finally, as I had hoped, I arrived in China in 2018 to start pursuing my master’s degree at a university in Beijing, the capital city of China.
I felt like everything was happening in a movie the first time that I met China. When in a taxi, I looked out of the window the whole time and enjoyed everything there, such as the clean sidewalks, the well-ordered traffic, and the beautiful greenery, etc. Since then, I fell in love with this country and hoped to explore Chinese culture in depth in the future.

SEU - A Crucial Decision for My Life
Just several months before I got my master's degree, Covid-19 broke out in China. Many international students preferred to return to their home countries to prevent infection by virus, but my fascination with China made me stay here in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. I was confident that China would overcome the predicament. It turned out I was right, and now China is considered the safest country in the world. In addition, I made another most crucial decision of my life - pursuing a Ph.D. Degree at SEU.
For one thing, SEU is located in Nanjing, a city that features beautiful scenery and a long history. For another, SEU is one of the prestigious universities in China, especially in the field of engineering, which is well known around the world. Also, SEU has a picturesque campus that brings together not a few international students from all over the world.
Most importantly, it is a place full of opportunities. There are many activities that I enjoy here, such as marathons, seminars, photography competitions, and all other social and cultural events. All these activities meant a lot to me because they have not only lifted my spirits but enriched my life.
As a photograph lover, I tend to capture every beautiful moment and scenery that I came across in my life. Several months ago, I was awarded the Second Prize in the "Foreigners' View of Nanjing" photography contest organized by Nanjing Public Diplomacy Association, which was a very special and unforgettable moment for me.
I recently participated in an event titled "Knowing China - Intelligence Makes Future", which was jointly organized by the Chinese government scholarship and Huawei, and 30 international students from 20 different countries gathered there.
In this event, I was honored to participate on behalf of SEU and offered a precious opportunity to visit Huawei’s Exhibition Center, where was full of the latest and upcoming technologies and to attend a seminar on HarmonyOS, which is noteworthy as Huawei’s new operating system (OS for short).
All these opportunities provided by SEU opened my eyes and deepened my understanding of current major. I can say that my study life at SEU was a crucial decision in my life.
Future Plan
After receiving my Ph.D. Degree from SEU, I plan to study more on artificial intelligence and join the lab as a postdoc to apply my knowledge to technology and build my research career so that I can devote myself to the technological construction of my country. As an economically disadvantageous country, Bangladesh cannot provide world-class research facilities, which is standing in the way of technological development, so I hope to use the advanced technology and ideas I've learnt in China to make some contributions to my country. I also hope that I can act as a bridge between China and Bangladesh to promote cooperation and exchange between the two countries.
